Magnesia Stabilized Zirconia Ceramics

Magnesia-stabilized zirconia ceramic (MSZ for short) is a high-performance engineering ceramic material.

It is composed of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and magnesium oxide (MgO), which is formed into a hard and wear-resistant ceramic body through a high-temperature sintering process.

Zirconia is a special ceramic material with high strength, high hardness, high toughness, good thermal stability and corrosion resistance. However, pure zirconia will undergo a phase change at high temperatures, from a monoclinic phase to a cubic phase, and the volume will expand rapidly, causing the material to fracture. In order to solve this problem, people add stabilizers, such as magnesium oxide, to zirconia to form magnesium-stabilized zirconia ceramics.

As a stabilizer, magnesium oxide can stabilize the cubic phase of zirconia and prevent phase change and volume expansion at high temperatures. At the same time, magnesium oxide can also improve the thermal shock resistance and thermal creep resistance of ceramics, making it more suitable for use in high-temperature environments.

Magnesium stabilized zirconia ceramics are widely used in aerospace, automotive, chemical industry, electric power, electronics and biomedicine. For example, it can be used to manufacture high-temperature furnaces, burners, thermocouple protection tubes, knives, artificial joints, etc.
